Mamelodi Sundowns are on the cusp of winning their third trophy this season, breaking a number of records on their road to doing it and have come as close as they ever have to winning the coveted CAF Champions League again – but Siya insiders have informed the crew that the Brazilians are weighing up the future of head coach Rulani Mokwena.

That any coach's future would come under scrutiny after having mathematically one of the club’s best seasons ever speaks of the high demands at the Brazilians.

Well-placed Siya sources have informed the crew that Mokwena’s future has come under the spotlight and that the club’s management are set to deeply assess the situation at the end of the 2023/24 season.

This publication understands that among the concerns from management is the style of play that Sundowns have adopted, which has left a faction of the club’s board unsatisfied as well as the 37-year-old’s recent spats in the media – of which there have been many in recent times.

As shocking as such a decision might be if Mokwena has to leave the club earlier than expected, the likes of Jose Mourinho had experienced a similar fate at Real Madrid in 2013 where he had left the Spanish giants despite what was arguably a good record at the helm.

The situation in South Africa comes despite the fact that Mokwena has led the side to a maiden African Football League title, as well as the DStv Premiership, which they could uniquely win undefeated, while they have also qualified for the final of the Nedbank Cup – all this in his first full season as the sole head coach.

Moreover, the club has also qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup, which takes place in June next year.

The Siya crew reached out to Sundowns for comment, but the club had not responded by the time this story was published.

With two games left to play, Sundowns have trampled a number of records like the longest unbeaten start to a new season, fewest goals conceded by a team, most wins in a DStv Premiership season and most points in a season.
