After being snubbed four times by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Judge David Unterhalter has finally been promoted to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) – while Judge Piet Koen, who recused himself from the Jacob Zuma trial, missed out.
The JSC on Monday interviewed 10 judges for three vacancies at the SCA and settled on Unterhalter, Gauteng High Court Judge Raylene Keightley and Eastern Cape High Court Judge John Smith as their chosen candidates.
Keightley had conducted an impressive interview and stressed that during her time serving as an acting SCA judge, she had produced rulings that did not require substantial reworking by colleagues.
