“Nothing is too difficult or impossible if you put in the hard yards.”
This is according to Engen Maths and Science School attendee, Hlumelo Koli, an alumnus of Marymount RC Secondary School in Kariega, who bagged four distinctions for matric - including 92% for maths and 89% for science – and is on a determined path to fulfill his dreams.
Hlumelo’s impressive matric marks have secured him a coveted place to study Actuarial Science at the University of Johannesburg in 2023, which will allow this KwaNobuhle local to graduate and uplift his family. Hlumelo attributes his success to his parents who, he says, are very supportive and want only the best for him.
“I grew up in a positive environment, with hard-working family and friends who all push each other to reach the best of our abilities.”
His advice for the matric class of 2023 is to live by the mantra he lives by: “Hard work pays, nothing is impossible.”
Hlumelo says the free Engen Maths and Science School supplementary classes that he attended every Saturday from Grade 10-12 provided him with crucial insights in Maths, Physical Sciences and English.
“The EMSS extra lessons exposed me to excellent teachers who revised concepts and we practised past papers which was very helpful.”
The Engen Maths and Science Schools have run for over 35 years, and offer underprivileged grade 10-12 learners free supplementary Maths, Science and English tuition on Saturdays at ten locations across South Africa.
Engen’s manager of Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement, Dr James Nyawera explains that the EMSS programme focuses specifically on providing extra tuition in “gateway” subjects such as mathematics and science.
“The EMSS programme seeks to harness the potential of talented young people in difficult circumstances and also to contribute to the pool of scarce skills in the country,” he adds.
Engen is incredibly proud of Hlumelo and all EMSS learners who completed matric in 2022, often despite extremely trying circumstances.
