  • Comedian Tol Ass Mo apologised for remarks he made about black women when announcing his split from wife, Mome.
  • He praised his wife for showed him grace and understanding during his mental health crisis.
  • The comedian also said the "unwavering support" of his wife helped get him back to being himself.

Comedian and reality TV star Tol Ass Mo made headlines in 2023 when he announced he was divorcing his wife, Mome.

Soon after that, reports surfaced that he was allegedly romantically linked with another woman, and pictures of him kissing the woman appeared on social media.

He shared the news of their separation in an interview with DJ Fresh on his What A Week podcast. In the same interview, he declared that he would never date a black woman again.

On Tuesday afternoon though, the comedian sang a different tune when he apologised for his comments about black women; he also thanked his wife, Mome Mahlangu, for her support throughout his ordeal.

''The path to reclaiming my well-being has been filled with challenges, including coming to terms with the impact of my actions. My return to the family fold, under the unwavering support of my wife, marks a significant milestone in my recovery. She has shown nothing but grace and understanding, even when my behaviour was most inexplicable and damaging,"' he said in the statement.

In the lengthy statement, Mahlangu said his life turned around in 2020 after he had a mental health crisis which resulted in "severe depression and mental breakdown."

"It is with great regret that I acknowledge the hurtful and confusing statements made during this period, including my alleged disparagement of black women. I want to make it unequivocally clear that such comments do not reflect my beliefs or values.

"The person who made those statements was not the person I recognise as myself, but rather a manifestation of the illness and the disorienting circumstances I was in."

Not so long ago, his wife Mome, penned a lesson she had taken away from the couple of months she had separated from her husband.

"What separation taught us is what it felt like to have a soul without a mate, when you are not with your soulmate and your soul lingers on its own seeking, until it finds its way back to its mate, yet storms are inevitable, can you stand the rain… everybody loves sunny days.

"Those who get it will get it, those who don't are yet to meet their soulmate," she captioned her post.

Although the married couple seem to have worked things out and are moving on, some of their fans grappled with accepting the fact that Mome took Mo back after his public outbursts.

Clinical psychologist and author of The Essential Guide to Surviving Infidelity Liz Currin previously spoke to News24 and said that if it's a one-time occurrence (infidelity), it doesn't have to mean the end.

"I've worked with countless couples where the cheater was desperate to save his or her marriage and was willing to do almost anything to make it happen," she said.

"Both parties need to be firmly committed to mending the relationship [to make it work]."

But here's where it gets tricky: Just because you commit to getting past the infidelity doesn't mean your friends and family do the same.

Currin said it was natural for the other party to turn to family and friends for support, but it might come back to bite later.

"They may resent what your partner has put you through or harbour even darker feelings," she said. "If possible, share your story with only one or two trusted friends," she advised.
