When seven-year-old Nkosana Buthelezi learnt about Covid-19 in school, he felt a sudden rush of concern. And as the weeks went by, with news trickling in of the deaths in Italy and other parts of the world, he knew he had to do something.

Two weeks ago, after realising South Africans were purchasing hand sanitiser at a dizzying rate, a business idea came to him.

“I decided to start my own business of sanitisers because people need them. And I heard in the news that some stores were out of them, that really worried me. I also want my friends and family to stay safe and clean,” little Nkosana tells us.

“And I want to make money to buy Legos,” he adds.

Before implementing his business idea, Nkosana did his research online and found a formula he thought was strong and safe enough to use for his product. Then he approached his parents, Sibusiso and Nobuhle Buthelezi with his business plan.

“We were immediately proud of our son for not only his brilliant mind and business savvy, but also for his thoughtfulness and kind nature,” Nobuhle says.

His parents gave him the capital and once the product was made, his father’s advertising, marketing and branding company, The Gifted Agency, did the packaging and branding for Nkosana’s Kleen Handz business.

Nkosana has gotten a lot of recognition for his smart idea – his friends, teachers and parents are very proud of him and are already supporting him.

When asked what plans he has for the future, Nkosana very excitedly told us, “To get my whole family to come to the house and make more sanitiser to sell for more money to buy Legos, especially my khulu and gogo.”

Spoken like a true seven-year-old! So sweet.
