In an interview for his new BBC documentary Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health, the Duke of Cambridge shared details about his experience of becoming a father for the first time.

Describing it as "one of the most amazing moments" but also "one of the scariest," Prince William said that he felt a flood of emotions after his first son, Prince George, was born back in 2013.

"I think when you've been through something traumatic in life... the emotions come back in leaps and bounds."

Having lost his mom, the late Princess Diana, when he was 15, Prince William says he had not expected to be reminded of her at the time of welcoming his son.

"Emotionally, things come out of the blue that you don't ever expect or that maybe you think you've dealt with."

Yet despite feeling "overwhelmed" with fatherhood, the Duke says that with his wife's support, he has felt that the experience was necessary for his growth.

"Me and Catherine particularly, we support each other, and we go through those moments together, and we kind of evolve and learn together."

The documentary forms part of Prince William's Heads Up campaign which hopes to inspire men from all walks of life to speak about their emotions and mental health.
