The new law allowing parents to take 10 days of paid parental leave after the birth of their child has been implemented.
Effective from 1 January 2020 parents may take 10 days of parental leave once per calendar year when their child is born.
Matthew Parks, COSATU's parliamentary coordinator, says the 10-day paid parental law excludes new biological mothers as they are already entitled to paid maternity leave.
"This covers fathers of new-born children and mothers of children born through surrogacy," says Parks.
South African women have the right to four months of maternity leave, with remuneration provisions covered by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

Parents must apply for their ten days of leave with their employer.
Should employers refuse to pay the full salary over the leave period, Parks says that the UIF will pay 66% of your salary.
