Sara Hinsley made headlines when she threw one amazing first pitch at a baseball game recently. She was given the honour for winning a handwriting competition. Significantly, though, the 10-year-old champion, was born without hands.
She’s developed her own technique for doing things, such as holding a pen, but her sister, Veronica, is always by her side in case she needs help zippering her coat or doing her hair. Veronica even created a temporary prosthetic hand made of cardboard and plastic, so they can play together and Sara can catch a ping-pong ball.
“I want to be a lawyer, and become a president, then go back to being a lawyer, and then become a judge,” says Sara, her dreams and aspirations firmly aligned with her family’s motto: “Be good. Be mighty. Do your best.”
