Service dog Copper and his human Connor are best friends.

The four-year-old Doberman and 10-year-old boy go everywhere together – not in the least because Connor Jayne, from Fairport in New York, relies on Copper to help him cope with his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety attacks, chronic headache disorder as well as severe nocturnal seizures, according to abc8news.

But now Copper is the one who needs help. The registered service and emotional support dog may have Wobbler Disease, which affects the animal’s spinal cord, making it difficult for them to walk.

Poor Copper, who has been limping since December 2017, will need an array of tests and treatments and possibly an MRI and surgery, reports People.

“When we found out how much the surgical consult and the MRI and surgery were going to cost we realised we just didn’t have that money,” Connor’s mom Jennifer Jayne says.

But her son sprang into action. The youngster organised a yard sale to sell his toys and raise money for his ailing canine.

Single mom Jennifer set up a GoFundMe page to help cover costs, which have already amounted to $2500 (R34 000).

At the moment, Copper’s vet is treating the canine’s mobility issues with laser therapy sessions.

The Jaynes are hopeful four weeks of the treatment will have Copper fully mobile again. If not, the Doberman will have to have more tests, and perhaps surgery.

“Your donations have helped make this therapy possible!” Jennifer wrote on the GoFundMe page. “It is very expensive and without your generosity we would not have the options we do so we thank you, so very much.”
