Anaphylactic shock

A life-threatening allergic reaction.

Symptoms:

  • Blotchy, itchy raised rash
  • Paleness and sweating
  • Anxiety
  • Swollen eyelids, lips and tongue
  • Puffy face and neck
  • Difficulty breathing 
  • Abdominal pain and sometimes vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Faintness
  • Drowsiness or loss of consciousness

Seriousness:

  • Anaphylactic shock is a medical emergency.
  • Take your child to a hospital emergency ward immediately for treatment.

Treatment:

  • A child with these symptoms must be taken to a hospital emergency room.
  • Don't let your child eat or drink anything and put her in a semi-sitting position to ease breathing.
  • If your child loses consciousness, follow the ABC of resuscitation- clear the airway, breathe into her mouth and do chest compressions.
