Anaphylactic shock
A life-threatening allergic reaction.
Symptoms:
- Blotchy, itchy raised rash
- Paleness and sweating
- Anxiety
- Swollen eyelids, lips and tongue
- Puffy face and neck
- Difficulty breathing
- Abdominal pain and sometimes vomiting and diarrhoea
- Faintness
- Drowsiness or loss of consciousness
Seriousness:
- Anaphylactic shock is a medical emergency.
- Take your child to a hospital emergency ward immediately for treatment.
Treatment:
- A child with these symptoms must be taken to a hospital emergency room.
- Don't let your child eat or drink anything and put her in a semi-sitting position to ease breathing.
- If your child loses consciousness, follow the ABC of resuscitation- clear the airway, breathe into her mouth and do chest compressions.
