A professional player of the Griqualand West Rugby Union (GWRU) has been arrested on Monday, 29 April, in Kariega in the Eastern Cape for alleged violent behaviour and assault at a liquor store.
On Friday, 26 April, the Griquas from the Northern Cape played in Kariega against the Eastern Province Elephants as part of the SA Cup Series.
In a press release dated 1 May, Arni van Rooyen, the CEO of the GWRU, stated, “it is with great regret that Griqualand West Rugby Union announces the arrest of one of its professional players, Kudzwai Dube, for alleged violent behaviour and assault at a liquor store.”
The incident, which occurred on 29 April in Kariega, has shocked and deeply saddened the Griqualand West Rugby community, Van Rooyen said.
“As an organisation committed to upholding the values of integrity, respect, and sportsmanship, we do not condone any form of violence or aggressive behaviour, both on and off the field.”
Dube, a former Blue Bulls U21 captain who joined Griquas towards the latter part of 2021, has been an integral part of the Griquas team, and GWRU are deeply disappointed by these allegations.
“We understand the seriousness of the situation and are cooperating fully with the local authorities in their investigation.
“At this time, Dube has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities pending further investigation and legal proceedings. The union will also be conducting its own internal review to determine the appropriate course of action.
“We extend our sincerest apologies to anyone affected by this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
“As an organisation, we remain committed to promoting a culture of respect, responsibility, and accountability among our players and staff. We will continue to uphold the highest standards of conduct and ensure that incidents like these are not tolerated within our union.”
Van Rooyen also asked, on behalf of Dube’s family, for privacy and understanding while navigating through this challenging situation.
He confirmed that GWRU remains dedicated to fostering a positive and inclusive environment for all members of the community, both on and off the field.
